Booral History

Aboriginal Habitation.

Booral Is steeped in aboriginal history with carbon dating on artifacts found on Fraser Island indicating their presence for over 6.000 years. Aboriginal elders dispute this dating and claim that indigenous Australians inhabited the whole of Australia since the “Dreaming”, a term used to indicate “since the beginning of time”.

Aboriginal clans wanting to visit the mainland had to leave a message stick in a tree or on a rock and if the mainland clans allowed the visit they would move the stick or leave their own message.

The foreshores of Booral have numerous large middens or “mounds of shells” along the waters edge and adjacent shoreline left by feasting aboriginals, many of whom traveled from as far away as Bunya Mountain to trade the Bunya Nut for shell fish found in abundance along Booral’s shores. The term “Midden” refers to the mounds of shells left after aboriginals had feasted on the shell fish. Many artifacts have been found along the foreshores of Booral and the remains of rock fish traps may still be seen.

The department of Environment and Resource Management, Queensland State Government, state that the name “Booral” was derived from the Kabi language of the Budjala group or tribe, associated with the sky god “Beiral” or “Burral”, place of shell mounds.

Booral is located approximately 18 km from the CBD of Hervey Bay, 10 km from the Fraser Island Barge at River Heads and 10 km from the Urangan shopping center.
